Favorite Loyd two movers

Samuel Loyd was one of the greatest chess composers and puzzle makers in history.  Below are some of my favorite Loyd mate in 2 problems.

Loyd, Samuel
Detroit Free Press, 1878
#2   8 + 4

The classic queen to the corner key 1.Qa1! (-) abandons the Q+S battery and hides the queen behind 3 pieces to handle 1...Sb4 with 2.axb4#.
Loyd, Samuel
Baltimore Gazette, 1859
#2   6 + 11

A collection of Loyd two movers would not be complete without Loyd's organ pipes. The key 1.Qa5 (-) runs the queen across the board and waits for the bB's and bR's to get in each others way. The wQ will then mate on b4, d5, or e5 and the wS will mate on f5.
Loyd, Samuel
Baltimore Dispatch, 1859
#2   4 + 7

The interference is not as complex as the organ pipes, but it is still a beautiful example of interference and self blocks.  With every move of black set with a mate - a complete block - one just has to find the waiting move 1.Ba2!.  Notice the Grimshaw interference on f7 and the self blocks on g6 and e5.
Loyd, Samuel
The Musical World, 1859
#2   5 + 1

A beautiful miniature (<8 pieces) with two model mates.  Checking keys are considered crude but the economy, double flight gift, and wB sacrifice justify the key 1.Bd5+.

    Chess Problems

On the side I like to dabble in chess problem composition.  I am mostly interested in two and three move direct mates.  I hope to convey the beauty and logic of chess problems with this blog. In the entries are some of my favorite problems and my own problems.  Before looking at the problems I suggest reading this introduction to the chess problem world by the British Chess Problem Society.  Also, here is a list of terminology  and themes.   Here is a link to my problems on yacpdb.
